March 12: X Games Debuts Drone Racing Thriller

The X Games went airborne today with its first-ever drone racing event in Austin. Aussie pilot Ryan ‘Blaze’ Carter won gold, weaving through obstacles at 120 mph. His final lap beat France’s Evan Dubois by 0.3 seconds in a photo finish. Drones buzzed like hornets, crashing and zipping past neon gates. Extreme sports just got a tech upgrade.

Carter’s custom rig—3D-printed, 5-inch props—outran 32 competitors. Qualifying rounds saw half the field wipe out; wreckage littered the course. He nailed the ‘Death Spiral,’ a 360-degree loop that tanked Dubois’ battery. ESPN’s drone cam feed had viewers dizzy. It’s niche, but the crowd ate it up.

Purists griped it’s not ‘real’ X Games—where’s the boards or bikes? Tech nerds countered: this is the future, deal with it. Crashes are brutal—$500 rigs turned to scrap in seconds. Safety’s tight; no one’s hurt, but sparks fly. Prize pot’s $50K, peanuts next to skateboarding, but it’s a start.

Carter’s eyeing the Drone Racing League next. He’s 26, a mechanic by day, racer by life. X Games might expand this—ratings topped BMX prelims. Could drones outpace motocross someday? For now, Blaze owns the sky.
