On January 29, 1995, Steve Young threw six touchdown passes in Super Bowl XXIX, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Young’s performance set a Super Bowl record for most touchdown passes in a single game.
Young’s connection with Jerry Rice was lethal, as Rice caught three of the six touchdown passes. Young spread the ball around, hitting five different receivers for scores.
‘I just wanted to get the monkey off my back,’ Young said, referencing the pressure to win a Super Bowl after taking over from Joe Montana. ‘It feels amazing to finally win it.’
Young’s 325 passing yards and six touchdowns earned him Super Bowl MVP honors and solidified his place among the great quarterbacks in NFL history.
The Chargers had no answer for Young’s precision and mobility, as he carved up their defense throughout the game. His ability to extend plays and find open receivers was on full display.
Young’s record-breaking Super Bowl performance remains one of the most memorable in the history of the big game, and a defining moment of his Hall of Fame career.
