Montreal had this game, and then it didn't, which has become a habit. The Canadiens led by two in the third period. They have now given away a two-goal lead four times this season. Macklin Celebrini scored at 2:13 of overtime, his second of the night, and the Sharks won 4-3 at the Bell Centre.

The winner was a power-play one-timer into the top corner. Jakub Dobes had been called for interfering with Colin Graf at 1:53 of overtime, and Celebrini cashed it. He also had an assist on the goal that tied the game. Tyler Toffoli one-timed Celebrini's pass from the right circle at 11:09 of the third, with Arber Xhekaj in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. Before that, Michael Misa had cut a 3-1 lead to 3-2 at 5:36, taking a feed from Kiefer Sherwood after Montreal turned it over and beating the defense to the net. Misa had hit the post earlier in the period.

Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield each had a goal and an assist for Montreal. The Canadiens' own recap credited Dobes with 28 saves. The league recap had him at 26. Either way he was not the reason a two-goal lead disappeared. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 31 at the other end.

San Jose had lost 3-1 in Toronto the night before and came in having dropped two straight. The Sharks are 5-4-1. Montreal, which had won three of its previous four, is 4-3-2 and opens a four-game road trip in Chicago. The building got the first 40 minutes it wanted. It did not get the last 25.
