This one was tied after 60 minutes and still tied after overtime. Carolina led 4-2 through two periods, Edmonton scored three times in the third, neither side scored in the extra period, and the Oilers took the shootout, 6-5. Leon Draisaitl had two goals and three assists. On a night the league recap never quite settled into a clean story, the scoresheet did.
Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists. That is the other half of a 5-5 game: Carolina was good enough to hold a two-goal lead after 40 minutes and not good enough to survive the third. Edmonton's comeback was three goals in one period, which is a habit that gets you a point and, on this night, the extra one.
Shootouts do not satisfy anybody who wanted a winner in the run of play. They do count. Draisaitl's five-point night is the part that will travel. The Hurricanes fly home knowing a third period got away.
