Philadelphia's home opener looked gone. The Cavaliers led by 29. Then Tyrese Maxey scored 32, Joel Embiid had 24, and the 76ers stunned Cleveland 114-106. LeBron James finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. It was the biggest comeback win of his career. Jaylen Brown added 21. Two games into the season, this group has already beaten the champion Knicks and the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals.
The fourth quarter is where it turned, and where it nearly turned into something else. Maxey started a 15-0 run that gave the Sixers the lead. He and James Harden, his former teammate, ended up nose to nose before they were separated. Harden finished with five assists. Donovan Mitchell matched Maxey's 32 and grabbed 10 rebounds, and it was not enough to hold a hole that large.
James has played a long time. A 29-point comeback in a home opener, in a lineup that did not exist last spring, is a different kind of notch. Cleveland will look at the lead it gave away. Philadelphia will look at a team that refused to let the night end early.
