Kenya’s 2020 Marathon Sweep

Kenya swept the 2020 Tokyo Marathon on February 29, men and women’s races. Eliud Kipchoge won in 2:02:40, a course record blast. Ruth Chepngetich took the women’s at 2:17:08, unreal pace. Cold rain tested all, Kenyans thrived. Over 37,000 runners bowed to their speed. The streets were theirs.

Kipchoge’s early surge dropped Ethiopia’s Legese fast. His 4:39-per-mile split crushed the field. Chepngetich gapped Japan’s Maeda by 5 minutes flat. Both led wire-to-wire, no drama. Tokyo’s flat course was their canvas. Kenya’s depth shone again.

The 2020 race moved from elites-only due to COVID. Kipchoge’s sub-2 exhibition loomed large still. Chepngetich’s time was a world lead then. Fans missed crowds, but TV caught it all. Kenya’s marathon grip tightened more. The double was routine.

Post-race, Kipchoge eyed Olympic gold, delayed to ’21. Chepngetich aimed to break 2:15 soon. The 2020 sweep was Kenya’s flex. Tokyo hailed their relentless legs. Marathon kings and queens ruled. The world took notice.
