Phelps’ 2020 Coaching Shift

Michael Phelps began coaching in 2020, mentoring kids post-retirement. After Rio 2016’s 28th medal, he joined Arizona State as an assistant. By October 15, his Baltimore camp drew young swimmers. The 35-year-old shared tips from his 23 golds. COVID delayed plans, but virtual sessions kicked off. Swimming’s GOAT turned teacher.

Phelps’ drills focused on technique, echoing his own prep. His 2008 Beijing haul—8 golds—set the bar kids chased. ASU’s Bob Bowman, his old coach, welcomed the help. The pandemic forced Zoom clinics, but Phelps adapted fast. Youngsters hung on his every word. His passion for the pool stayed alive.

The shift came after years of mental health advocacy post-swim. Phelps’ camps aimed to build confidence, not just speed. Parents praised his patience, a new side of him. Tokyo 2020’s delay let him refine the gig. His name drew talent like a magnet. Swimming gained from his pivot.

By 2021, Phelps eyed in-person camps, COVID willing. The 2020 start planted seeds for future stars. His legacy grew beyond medals to mentorship. Kids dreamed of his butterfly records. Phelps found purpose in giving back. The pool remained his kingdom.
